Why You Need to Know How Your Partner Likes to Give and Receive Support

When you first start seeing someone, you may schedule a few dates here and there. You start off slow by getting to know the basics. You start with their name, where they’re from, their profession, and their hobbies. Over time, you start to dive deeper. You ask more serious questions. You build more interest, trust, and a solid foundation and connection. It’s like you’re each feeling back the layers of an onion. You’re revealing new information to one another every time you get together or talk in general.

Relationships involve you constantly learning things about one another. It’s not always going to be sunshine and rainbows, no matter how perfect you may be for one another. Life has its ups and downs. You and your partner may have good days and bad days. You may even have a few miscommunications or disagreements along the way.

Here’s why you need to know how your partner likes to give and receive support.

Communicate More Effectively

When it comes to relationships, you can’t just assume the other person will know what you want or need. You wouldn’t want them to expect that out of you, so you shouldn’t be expecting that from them either. Plus, you know what they say about assuming… Communication is a two-way street. Take the time to be clear and concise about what you’re looking for. By actively communicating your wants and needs, you can avoid a lot of the miscommunication that can come with just assuming.

Do More Things Out of Love

When you are open and honest about your needs and what each of you is looking for, you and your partner can both work towards being conscious about doing things out of love. If your love languages or ways of giving and showing support differ from one another, when you go out of your way to give or show support, your partner will know it’s genuine and that you care deeply about them. You can actively show your partner how much they mean to you and how important you are to them by going out of your way to meet their needs and match their support style.

Feel More Appreciated

You and your partner are two completely different people. You each have your own needs, wants, goals, values, and more. The way that you and your partner give and receive support may be the complete opposite of one another. When you each take the time to learn about one another’s preferred methods of giving and receiving love and support, you can actively work to make sure the other person feels appreciated, valued, and supported.

Next Steps

Communicating is one of those things in life that can constantly be improved upon. Even if you and your partner are each other’s perfect match, soul mate, or partner in crime, you will come across some problems communicating here and there. Don’t worry, it’s completely normal. You’re human. Miscommunication is what can help you grow and strengthen the bond you share together. You and your partner should constantly be learning new things about one another. The mistakes and miscommunication can help you make sure it doesn’t happen again in the future.

If your communication is feeling a little “off”, you’re not alone. Sometimes an outside third party like a therapist can help add a new perspective that you and your partner may not have considered. Therapy isn’t just for couples who are struggling. It can be a great option for you and your partner to ensure you’re always on the same page.
